Grade-A solid oak, right through
Every door in this range is worked from solid oak, right through the door — not an oak face over a core. Our hand-crafted range is cut from grade-A American oak, chosen for its warm tone, straight even grain and the density that makes it so hard-wearing outdoors. That solidity is what gives the door its weight and its decades of life: it can be sanded back and re-oiled years later rather than replaced, and it only gains character as it ages. If you would rather have an oak face on a stable engineered core for a very wide or exposed opening, our veneered external doors are the alternative.
Mortice-and-tenon joinery
These doors are built the traditional way, around a mortice-and-tenon jointed oak frame — the interlocking joint that has held doors square for centuries and resists the twisting and movement the weather works into lesser construction. Within that frame, boarded designs carry v-grooved solid oak boards and panelled designs solid oak panels, so the door is genuine oak throughout. Kiln-dried and heavy in the hand, it is made to be hung for a lifetime.
Styles across the range
Whatever the property, there is a solid oak design to suit it:
- Cottage and board-and-brace doors for period and rural homes
- Victorian, 1930s and panelled designs for traditional façades
- Diamond and Suffolk styles with feature glazing apertures
- Contemporary designs such as the Mexicano for a cleaner look
- Stable and French styles for kitchens, utilities and garden access
Prefinished or ready to treat
Some doors are supplied prefinished, arriving already protected and ready to hang; others are supplied unfinished, ready for you to oil every face and edge before fitting. Either way a solid oak door benefits from re-coating over time — our external door treatments cover the oils we stock and how to keep the oak weather-tight. A solid oak door is happiest under a porch or canopy rather than fully open to the weather.
Front, back and completing the door
A solid oak door makes a handsome front door. Round the back, it works just as well as a sturdy back door. Hang it in a matching oak door frame, cill included, and add the right external door handles and hardware. It is all part of our wider external door range — see everything on the external doors hub.
Frequently asked questions
It is worked from solid oak right through — our hand-crafted doors from grade-A American oak — around a traditional mortice-and-tenon jointed frame, rather than an oak veneer over an engineered core. That gives it real weight, depth of grain and the ability to be re-sanded and re-oiled over its life.
Kept oiled and ideally sheltered under a porch or canopy, a solid oak door lasts for decades, and can be refinished rather than replaced as it ages.
Both: some arrive prefinished and ready to hang, others are supplied unfinished for you to oil before fitting. The product page states how each door is supplied.
