Oak Internal Double Doors

Double doors are a pair of doors hung to meet in the middle, opening together to give a wide, generous opening that a single door cannot. Indoors they make a real feature of the way between two rooms, and they can be closed for privacy or opened right up to make one larger space. There are two ways to get a pair from our range: choose one of our ready-made glazed pairs, or use our solid oak pair maker, which lets you turn any two matching single oak doors into a pair. That means you are not limited to a handful of designs, as almost any oak door in the range, solid oak or oak veneer, can become a double door.

Two ways to a pair

It helps to decide whether you want a pair ready to hang or a pair built from doors you have chosen:

• Ready-made pairs, supplied glazed and set up to hang together
• The solid oak pair maker, which joins any two matching single oak doors into a pair
• Solid oak or oak veneer doors, in the style you want, made into a double
• Clear glazing on the ready-made pairs to keep light moving between rooms

The pair maker is what makes the double-door option so flexible, because it turns the whole single-door range into potential pairs rather than tying you to a few set designs.

Where double doors work

A pair earns its place across a wide opening that a single door would leave looking narrow, such as between a living and dining room, into a study or snug, or as a divider in an open-plan space. Open, the pair links the two rooms into one; closed, it still gives a clear division and, on a glazed pair, keeps the light flowing through. A double door also brings a sense of occasion to a doorway, which is why they suit both period and contemporary homes.

Solid oak or oak veneer

Our ready-made pairs are an oak veneer over an engineered core, glazed to share light across the opening. If you would rather a solid pair, the pair maker lets you take two solid oak doors, whether a panelled, plank or cottage design, and hang them as a double, so you keep oak all the way through. Whichever route you choose, the pair carries the natural grain and warmth of oak across the full width of the opening.

Fitting a pair

A pair needs a clean meeting edge where the two leaves come together, which is exactly what the pair maker sets up when it joins two single doors. Allow for the extra width of two leaves in the opening, and plan the handles and any catch early. You will find suitable handles and fittings in our door hardware.

Finishing your double doors

The doors are supplied unfinished, or with our oiling service if you would rather they arrived ready. Seal every face before or soon after fitting, and keep the oil off any glass. A suitable hardwax oil such as Treatex protects the oak and lets the grain show; our door treatments cover what to use.
