European oak is a warmer, more golden oak, with more figure and movement in the grain. The doors in this range are solid European oak, built as traditional plank and cottage styles that suit a period home, a cottage or a barn conversion. They carry the knots, colour and natural movement of a character-grade board, so no two doors read quite the same. It is the oak to choose when you want extra warmth and figure in the grain.

- Built as traditional plank and cottage styles for a period home

European oak or American white oak
The oak itself comes in two characters, and it is simply a question of the look you prefer. European oak is warmer and more golden, with more figure and movement in the grain, for a characterful feel. Our American white oak doors, the heart of our oak range, have a straighter, more even grain and a cleaner, more contemporary look. Both are excellent oak, so the choice is simply the tone and character you want in the room.
Solid oak, through and through
Every door here is solid oak, oak all the way through rather than a veneer over a core. The grain runs to the edges, and the door can be eased to fit and sanded back and refinished over its life. You will find the wider range of solid oak doors alongside these, and if you would rather a stable engineered build, our oak veneer doors set an oak face over a core instead. For the top selection of clean, even boards, see our Grade A solid oak doors. European oak sits at the characterful end of that family, where the knots and movement are part of the look.
Characters and finishes to choose from
European oak is a character grade, so it sits alongside our other oak characters rather than replacing them. Our rustic range covers character-grade plank doors in American white oak, while our light oak doors hold the palest tone of all. You can also choose how the door is finished: our unfinished doors are supplied bare to treat yourself, and our prefinished doors arrive already sealed. Compare every material, finish and character side by side on our internal doors by material and finish page.
Finishing and caring for European oak doors
European oak takes an oil finish well, and its warmer tone deepens a little as the oil goes on. We recommend a clear hardwax oil such as Treatex, and Treatex also make coloured oils if you want to adjust the tone. Give the door a light sand, remove the dust, and apply two thin coats, sealing every face and edge. Avoid Danish oil, varnish and lacquer, as these do not protect the oak in the same way and can void the guarantee. You will find the oils on our internal door treatments page, and traditional door hardware suits the character look.
