Product Details

Description

Solid Oak Rustic Bi-Fold 3 Ledge Bead and Butt Cottage Door

This Solid Oak Rustic Bi-Fold 3 Ledge Bead and Butt Cottage Door is a rustic oak bifold, one of our oak barn doors set up to fold rather than swing. It is a plank door built on three horizontal ledges, with no diagonal braces, and it folds down the middle so it takes up less room than a swinging door. That suits a wardrobe, an en-suite, a pantry or a room divider in a period home, a barn conversion or a cottage.

It is made from rustic grade solid oak, so you can expect the knots, splits and colour movement that give a rustic door its character. As with any natural product, these marks vary from door to door, and they are part of the appeal rather than a fault.

We do some of the hard work for you by filling the deeper knots and sanding out the rougher patches, so less preparation is needed before you finish and hang the door. Even so, enough character is left to give the rustic, authentic look people want from a solid oak door.

The boards are finished with a bead and butt profile, where a rounded bead runs along each joint for a softer, traditional line. It is worked into the same solid oak boards, so it changes the character of the door without changing how it is built.

A bifold is made in two leaves hinged together. We suggest using three H-hinges to join the leaves, which you can find on our door hardware pages, along with the latches and other fittings to match.

Being solid oak all the way through, rather than an oak face over a manufactured core, the door can be sanded back and re-treated over its life, and trimmed a little to fit an opening. Oak moves slightly with the seasons, so leave a small gap for expansion when fitting.

The door is supplied pre-sanded and unfinished, so you can give it the look that best matches your home. Use a suitable hardwax oil such as Treatex, or let our in-house oiling service pre-treat it for you before delivery. Oak needs a finish to protect it and bring out the grain, so seal all faces before hanging, including the top and bottom edges, which are the ones most often missed.

The door is also available in made-to-measure sizes for a non-standard opening. Please note that all rustic doors contain natural coloured filler in any open knots, which is part of the rustic character rather than a fault.

Important Information

Please note that all of our solid oak products (unless otherwise stated) are initially unfinished. If you choose to have your solid oak product prefinished, when installing door fittings and/or trimming the door size, be sure to treat newly exposed surfaces with a Hardwax oil to reseal those areas. The doors displayed on our website vary in appearance due to the different finishes being used by ourselves and customers alike; in addition to the natural qualities of the wood, this will also contribute to the door’s appearance. All hinges, handles, levers, and door accessories are for illustration purposes only and sold separately. We cannot guarantee an exact match to images used across our door product imagery for the reasons stated above.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this door solid oak?
Yes. This door is 100% solid oak throughout, rather than an oak veneer over an engineered core.
What finish would you recommend on this door?
We recommend using a suitable hardwax oil to protect the door against the elements and everyday use. Most paints, stains and standard varnishes are unsuitable for this purpose and their use will most likely void the warranty.
How is the Solid Oak Rustic Bi Fold 3 Ledge Bead and Butt Cottage Door constructed?
It is built from upright rustic grade oak boards with a bead and butt profile along each joint, held by three horizontal ledges, and hung as a bi-fold so the leaves fold back against each other.
What is the difference between a solid oak door and an oak veneer door?
A solid oak door is made from solid oak throughout, rather than a thin oak veneer over an engineered core. This gives it a substantial feel, natural variation and long-lasting character, so you get authentic oak in your home.
