Narrow Oak Doors for Small Openings
At 610mm, or 24 inches, this is the narrowest of the standard internal door widths, the size you reach for when a full-width door simply will not fit. It is the natural choice for a small or awkward opening, and because the leaf is slim it lets a cramped doorway open and close cleanly without stealing space from the room. It sits at the narrow end of our range of popular door sizes and comes in the standard 1981mm (78 inch) height, so it is the width, not a shorter leaf, that makes it suit tight spaces.
Where These Doors Work Best
A narrow internal door earns its place wherever the opening is small or the space around it is tight. It is the width to reach for in:
- Cupboards and airing cupboards, where a slim leaf clears shelving and nearby walls.
- Cloakrooms and downstairs WCs, and en-suites carved out of a larger room.
- Box rooms and the understairs, where every inch of swing matters.
- The smaller doorways common in cottages, older terraces and period homes.
Some designs also come in a narrower 533mm (21 inch) width, and a made-to-measure door can be built for anything else. If your openings turn out to be larger, the range steps up through the 27 inch, the standard 30 inch and the wider 32 inch sizes.
Designs for a Compact Opening
A small opening does not mean a plain door. Most of the main styles are made in this width, from panelled and shaker designs to cottage and period patterns. In a windowless cloakroom or a dim box room a glazed oak door does real work, borrowing daylight from the hallway or a brighter room next door, so it is worth looking at the glazed patterns made at this size. A small room is also where a fire door is often needed, an integral garage lobby or a WC off a hall among them, and a certified FD30 fire door is made in this width too.
A Stable Leaf and a Natural Finish
On a narrow leaf the construction still counts. A solid oak door is oak throughout and can be eased and refinished over the years, while an oak veneer door faces an engineered core that keeps a leaf flat in the steam and damp a cloakroom or en-suite sees. Doors come prefinished, ready to hang, or unfinished to seal once fitted, and in a compact room, where the door is often seen close up, the finish is what you notice. For an unfinished leaf we recommend a hardwax oil such as Treatex, which keeps the oak looking natural and is simple to wipe over again, rather than a stain, varnish or lacquer.
