Narrow Oak Doors for Small Openings
At 610mm, or 24 inches, this is the narrowest of the standard internal door widths, the size you reach for when a full-width door simply will not fit. It is the natural choice for small openings, and because the leaf is slim it can turn an awkward, cramped doorway into something that opens and closes cleanly without stealing space from the room. You will find it across our range of popular door sizes as the entry point at the narrow end. These doors come in the standard 1981mm (78 inch) height, so it is the width, not a shorter leaf, that makes them suit tight spaces, and for anything narrower than 24 inches a made-to-measure door can be built to fit.
Where These Doors Work Best
A narrow internal door earns its place wherever the opening is small or space is tight: cupboards and airing cupboards, cloakrooms and downstairs WCs, en-suites, box rooms, and the understairs. It also suits the narrower doorways common in cottages, older terraces and period homes, where openings were often built smaller than they are today. In a small or windowless room a glazed door can make a real difference, borrowing light from the hallway or a brighter room next door, so it is worth looking at the glazed oak doors made in this width. If your openings turn out to be larger, the range steps up through the next size, a 27 inch (686mm) door for many older homes, the standard 30 inch (762mm) door for most rooms, and a wider 32 inch (813mm) door for more generous openings.
Styles and Construction to Choose From
A small opening does not mean a limited choice. Most of the main styles are made in this width, from plain and panelled oak doors to cottage and period designs, shaker looks and glazed patterns, in both solid oak and oak veneer. Solid oak doors are oak throughout and can be trimmed and refinished over the years, while oak veneer doors face an engineered core that keeps the leaf stable and flat. Small rooms are also where a fire door is often needed, an integral garage lobby or a WC off a hallway among them, so certified FD30 fire doors are made in this width too, always as an oak veneer over a fire-resisting core rather than solid oak, as the core is what carries the certification.
Finishing and Hardware
Unfinished oak doors are ready to seal once they are hung, and the finish you choose makes a real difference to how the oak wears. We recommend a hardwax oil such as Treatex, which protects the wood while keeping the grain visible and is easy to refresh in years to come, rather than a stain, varnish or lacquer.
