Oak Doors Supplied Ready to Finish
An unfinished door is supplied as bare oak, with no seal or oil applied, so the finish is yours to choose and apply once it is hung. This is the door for anyone who wants full control over the final colour and sheen, or who needs it to match joinery, a floor or skirting already in the room. Because the oak is bare, it does need finishing fairly soon after it is hung, as untreated oak will mark and pick up moisture. The work itself is straightforward, and the result is a finish applied by hand to suit your own room rather than a factory coat.
- Supplied as bare oak, ready for you to oil to the colour and sheen you want
- Lets you match a floor, skirting or joinery already in the room
- In solid oak and oak veneer, across panelled, shaker, cottage and glazed styles
- Several glazed designs are supplied unglazed, so you fit your own glass
Unfinished or prefinished
The first choice is whether you finish the door yourself or let the factory do it. An unfinished door gives you that control, so you can tone the oak and set the sheen exactly as you want it. Our prefinished oak doors arrive with the oak already sealed instead, ready to hang faster with no finishing of the faces on site. Choose unfinished when matching an existing finish or getting a specific colour matters more than speed, and prefinished when you want the door up and done in a day. When a door has to sit beside a floor or frame you cannot change, unfinished is the safer choice, as you can match the finish by eye.
How to finish an unfinished oak door
We recommend a clear hardwax oil such as Treatex, which soaks into the oak and leaves a natural, low-sheen finish that is easy to patch and repair later. Give the door a light sand, remove the dust, and apply two thin coats, letting each dry before the next. Treatex also make coloured hardwax oils, so you can tone the oak and still keep the natural, oiled finish. Avoid Danish oil, varnish and lacquer, as these do not protect the oak in the same way and can void the door guarantee. A hardwax oil keeps the grain visible and lets you top up a worn spot without stripping the whole door. You can find the oils we recommend on our internal door treatments page, along with guidance on how much you will need.
Solid oak, and the rest of the range
Our unfinished doors come in two constructions. A solid oak door is oak all the way through and takes an oil finish well across the whole door. An oak veneer door has an oak face over an engineered core that stays flat in a busy or humid room. The bare oak also comes in different characters. Our rustic grade keeps the knots and movement, while American white oak reads cleaner and more even. For the palest tone, see our light oak doors. Our European oak doors carry a warmer, more figured grain, and our Grade A solid oak doors are cut from the top selection grade. You can compare every material, finish and character on our internal doors by material and finish page, then pick matching door hardware to complete the fit.
Unfinished Oak Door FAQs
An unfinished door is supplied as bare oak, with no oil or seal applied. You finish it yourself once it is hung, which lets you set the exact colour and sheen to match your room.
We recommend a clear hardwax oil such as Treatex. Give the door a light sand, remove the dust, and apply two thin coats, letting each dry before the next. This leaves a natural finish that is easy to patch later.
You can tone the oak with a coloured hardwax oil, such as the coloured Treatex oils, which soak in and keep the grain visible. We would not use Danish oil, varnish or lacquer, as these do not protect the oak in the same way and can void the door guarantee.
