Material and finish describe what a door is made of and how its surface is treated. They are a separate choice from its style or its size. Two doors can share the same look yet be built and finished in completely different ways. How the door is built

This is the first choice to make, and it is about the body of the door rather than its surface. Our solid oak doors are oak throughout. A solid leaf can be eased to the frame and refinished over many years, so it suits a door you mean to keep for the long term. We also offer oak veneer internal doors, which set an oak face over an engineered core. That core holds the leaf flat and stable through the changes in temperature and humidity a busy room sees. Both are oak doors, and the real choice is whether you want oak throughout or a core built for stability.

Prefinished and unfinished doors

Finish is about how the surface of the door is treated. Every oak door is either sealed before it reaches you or left for you to treat yourself. Our prefinished oak doors arrive with their faces already sealed and hang quickly. Any cut-outs you make for hinges and a latch still expose bare oak, so seal those as you fit them. Our unfinished oak doors leave the final tone in your hands, to match the oak to the rest of the room once the door is hung. For an unfinished door we recommend a hardwax oil such as Treatex, which protects the oak while keeping the grain visible. You will find the oils for it in our internal door treatments range.

The character of the oak

Some ranges are defined by the oak itself rather than the shape of the door, so the same style can be had in a different character of wood. Our rustic oak doors are the character grade. They carry the knots, grain movement and colour variation of a more natural board. Our American white oak doors take a different character again, with a cleaner, more even grain that suits a more uniform look. For the palest doors in the range, our light oak doors hold the lightest tones of all.
