External Stable Doors in Solid Oak

An external stable door is a door split across the middle, so the top half can open on its own while the bottom half stays shut. It is the classic choice for a back or garden entrance, letting in light and fresh air while a dog or a small child stays safely inside. Ours are built for outdoor use in grade-A solid oak, with engineered oak options for wide or exposed openings. You can buy a complete door, or make one up from a separate stable top and base.

Oak Stable Doors for Outdoor Use

An external stable door has two jobs: to work as a friendly, open entrance in summer, and to shut tight against the weather the rest of the year. Solid oak suits both. The range is led by our hand-crafted solid oak external doors, worked from thick sections of oak so the door feels solid and takes a lock well, with the natural grain giving a back or garden doorway real character.

Styles in the range

The stable doors come in a handful of established designs. The cottage stable door has a small feature window and vertical v-grooved boards, so you get daylight without the whole entrance being on show. The four panel and French designs put more glass in the top half for a brighter doorway, and there is a prefinished Suffolk stable door for anyone who would rather skip the finishing. Where a design has a glazed top, it sits alongside our wider glazed external doors.

Complete doors, or a stable top and base

You can buy a complete stable door ready to hang, or build one from two halves. Buying the top and base separately lets you pair the top you want with a matching base, which helps when you are working to an existing opening. The solid oak stable tops have the rebate machined in and are reversible, so the finished door can be hung to open inwards or outwards. Every door and half is made to the opening you give us, with bespoke sizes on request.

Glass, where the design is glazed

On a solid oak stable door or top, the glazed opening is supplied unglazed and machined ready for a sealed unit, which your fitter supplies to your chosen glass. That is useful when you want obscured glass for privacy on a door facing the garden. The engineered oak stable doors, part of our veneered external doors, arrive pre-glazed with the sealed unit already fitted at the factory.

Built for the weather

An external oak door earns its keep when it is looked after. Most doors are supplied unfinished, so oil every face and edge before hanging and re-coat around every six months; our external door treatments page covers the method. A weather bar throws rain clear of the threshold, and the door is happiest under a porch or canopy. Hang it in a matching oak door frame with the cill included, and complete it with the hinges, handles and locks in our external door hardware.
