Oak External Stable Doors

Open the top for light and air while the bottom half stays shut: that is what an external stable door brings to a back or garden entrance, with a dog or a small child still safely inside. Ours are built for outdoor use and led by our hand-crafted solid oak external doors, worked from thick sections of oak so the door feels solid and takes a lock well. You can buy a complete door, or build one from a separate stable top and base.

Styles and glazing

The range comes in a handful of established designs. The cottage stable door has a small feature window and vertical v-grooved boards, so you get daylight without the whole entrance being on show; the four panel and French designs put more glass in the top half for a brighter doorway; and there is a prefinished Suffolk stable door for anyone who would rather skip the finishing. On a solid oak door or top the glazed opening is supplied unglazed and machined ready for the glass your fitter supplies, so you can choose clear or obscured; the fully and half-glazed designs sit alongside our wider glazed external doors.

Engineered oak stable doors

Alongside the hand-crafted solid oak, the range includes engineered oak stable doors for wider or more exposed openings, where a fully solid door is more likely to move. Each one keeps an oak veneer over a stable engineered core, so it holds its shape and stays flat while still reading as oak once finished. They arrive pre-glazed, with a sealed double-glazed unit already fitted, so there is no separate glazing to arrange, and like the solid oak doors they split across the middle to open top and bottom. A complete door, or a stable top and base

You can buy a complete stable door ready to hang, or build one from two halves. Buying the top and base separately lets you pair the top you want with a matching base, which helps when you are working to an existing opening, and the solid oak tops have the rebate machined in. Finishing and the weather

Most doors are supplied unfinished, so oil every face and edge before hanging and re-coat around every six months; our external door treatments page covers the method, and a weather bar throws rain clear of the threshold. An external oak door is happiest under a porch or canopy.

Frames, fitting and hardware

A stable door needs a frame built to suit its split leaves, so hang it in a matching external oak door frame with the cill included, squared and sealed against the weather. Then complete it with the hinges, bolts, handles and locks it needs from our external door hardware, all weather-rated and chosen to suit the style of the door.
