Oak Stable Internal Doors

An internal stable door is a single doorway split across the middle into two solid oak leaves that open on their own, so you can swing the top open while the bottom stays shut. Indoors that makes it a genuinely useful door: in a kitchen, utility or pantry it lets light and air pass over an open top while the lower half keeps pets or young children where you want them. It brings a warm, sociable, farmhouse feel to a room, with the same friendly half-open look you would expect, without losing everyday practicality. It suits period and cottage homes especially well, though it works just as happily in a modern kitchen. Every stable door in this range is solid oak, so both leaves carry the same natural grain and character as a full solid oak door.

Solid oak through and through

These are solid oak doors in the truest sense, worked from oak all the way through rather than an oak face over a core, so the grain runs right across both leaves and no two doors look quite the same. We make them in prime Grade A oak for a clean, even face, and in a rustic grade where a knottier, more characterful look suits the room. Each leaf is a proper door in its own right, built to hang and close on its own, which is what lets the two halves work independently. Chosen and cared for well, a solid oak stable door stays a feature of the room for many years.

Choose your profile

The look comes down to how the boards are worked, and every profile is hand-made. A plank stable door with a cock-bead detail gives a crisp, classic face that suits both country and more restrained interiors. A V-groove profile cuts a clean vertical groove between the boards for a little more shadow and definition. A butt-and-bead profile softens those joints with a rounded bead for a gentler, more traditional cottage feel. All three are solid oak, so the choice is about the character you want rather than the quality of the door.

Hanging and locking a stable door

Because a stable door is really two doors in one frame, each leaf hangs on its own pair of hinges and meets the other across the middle. A bolt or catch joins the two halves so they open and close as a single door when both are shut, and releases when you want just the top open. It is worth planning the ironmongery early, as the split and the extra hinges change what you need; you will find suitable hinges, bolts and handles in our door hardware.

Finishing your stable door

Our stable doors are supplied unfinished, or with our oiling service if you would rather they arrive ready, so you can match the tone to the rest of your oak. Seal every face before or soon after hanging, and do not forget the edges along the split where the two leaves meet, as these are just as exposed as the outer faces.
