Oak Doors for 27 Inch Openings
At 686mm, or 27 inches, this is an older imperial door width, from before 762mm (30 inches) became the usual UK standard. It sits between the narrow 24 inch size and the standard 30 inch. It belongs to our range of popular door sizes and is made in the standard 1981mm (78 inch) height. If your home already has 27 inch doors, this is the width that lets you replace tired leaves without touching the openings around them.
Matching an Existing 27 Inch Doorway
The real draw of this size is the like-for-like fit. Where an opening was built for a 27 inch leaf, a new oak door of the same width drops into the existing frame and lining, so you can change the doors without re-lining the opening or disturbing the architrave and skirting. Older openings are rarely perfectly true, though, so a few checks before you order will save trouble later:
- Measure the structural opening rather than the old door, at the top, middle and bottom, and work to the largest figure.
- Check whether the frame is square, as settlement over the years leaves many older openings out of true.
- Confirm the height, since these doors come in the standard 1981mm (78 inch).
- Where an opening is an odd or non-standard size, a made-to-measure door can be built to fit.
Designs Made at 27 Inches
Most of the main styles are made in this width, so the choice is not limited to one look. You will find traditional four-panel and panelled oak doors, cottage, ledged and shaker patterns, and a glazed oak door that can lift daylight into a dim hallway or landing. Where the regulations call for one, a certified FD30 fire door is made in this width too. If the openings elsewhere in the house are a different standard, the range runs either side, from a narrower 24 inch door to the standard 30 inch and a wider 32 inch.
Oak That Ages Well
At this width a solid oak door is oak the whole way through, which lets the leaf be eased and planed to an opening that has shifted over the years, and refinished again decades from now. An oak veneer door faces an engineered core instead, giving a flat, stable leaf that holds its line through the changes in warmth and damp a well-used room sees. Both come prefinished or unfinished; for an unfinished leaf we recommend a hardwax oil such as Treatex, which soaks in to feed the grain and wipes on again in future without the stripping back that a varnish or lacquer would need. You will find those oils in our door treatments range and matching handles, hinges and latches in door hardware.
Yes. 686mm is the metric equivalent of a 27 inch door, so the two describe the same leaf width. You will see both used across the range, though 27 inch is the more common way to ask for it.
27 inches (686mm) is an older imperial door width that was common before 762mm (30 inches) became the usual UK standard, so it turns up most often in Victorian, Edwardian and 1930s homes and other older properties. If your existing internal doors measure around 27 inches, this is the size to replace them with.
Usually, yes. If your current doors are 27 inches wide, a new 686mm door is a like-for-like replacement into the same frame or lining, so you can update the doors without re-lining the opening. Measure the width and height, check the opening is square, and allow a little for trimming, as older homes are rarely perfectly true.
