Bathroom Doors in Privacy Glass and Solid Oak

A bathroom asks something of a door that other rooms do not: privacy, usually without shutting out the light a small or internal room needs. It is also the most humid room in the house, so the door has to cope with steam and the swings in temperature a bath or a shower brings. The oak doors gathered here handle both, and they fall into two groups: privacy-glazed doors that let daylight through without a clear view, and solid oak panelled doors that close the room off completely. Which suits you comes down to whether the bathroom has its own window or borrows its light from the landing.

Privacy without losing the light

Where a bathroom has little natural light, a privacy-glazed door borrows it from the space outside while keeping the room private, and the glass does the work. Our frosted and obscure glazed doors use frosted, reeded or Pattern 10 glass you cannot see a clear image through, so light passes but the room stays screened. A clear-glazed door will not give you that, so for a bathroom look to a frosted, obscure or reeded design. Where you want more privacy again, a half-glazed design keeps the glass to the upper part of the door, and a fully solid panelled design closes the room off entirely while keeping the warmth and grain of oak.

  • Frosted, reeded and obscure glazing for light without a clear view
  • Half-glazed designs that keep the glass to the top of the door
  • Solid oak panelled doors where the room needs to be fully private
  • Narrow widths for a compact en-suite, cloakroom or WC

Oak in a humid room

Oak belongs in a bathroom as readily as anywhere else, as long as it is sealed properly and the room is ventilated. Before the door goes into use, finish every face and edge, including the top and bottom, with a hardwax oil such as Treatex, which soaks into the oak and leaves a natural, repairable finish that stands up to the moisture a bathroom throws at it. Re-oil from time to time and the door will take the humidity in its stride; our door treatments page sets out what to use and how much. Beyond the finish, an extractor fan or an opening window does the rest, clearing steam so standing moisture never sits against the door.

Sizes and fitting

Bathrooms and en-suites are often the tightest openings in the house, so check the width of the opening before you choose rather than assuming a standard size. Our size and room guide sets out the standard and narrower widths, including the slimmer doors made for cloakrooms and en-suites. Where a door is supplied half-glazed and unglazed, you take the opening to a local glazier for obscure safety glass once the door is hung and fit the loose beading over it, so the exact glass is yours to choose. Finish the job with matching handles and a privacy lock or bathroom turn, which locks from the inside and can be released from the landing in an emergency.

Oak doors for the rest of the house

Few people replace only the bathroom door, so the rest of the range is grouped by room in the same way. Our bedroom doors gather the quieter, solid designs, our living room doors lean to glazed and feature styles that borrow light and open a space up, and our kitchen doors bring together the lighter, hard-wearing designs a kitchen gets through. To shop every room and width in one place, go up to the internal doors by size and room hub.

Yes, as long as the oak is finished and sealed before use and the room is ventilated. Seal every face and edge, including the top and bottom, with a hardwax oil, re-oil from time to time, and keep an extractor or window to clear moisture.

Obscure, frosted or reeded glass lets light through without a clear view. Clear glazing will not, so choose a frosted or obscure design, or a solid panelled door.

A solid oak door closes the room off completely and suits a bathroom with its own window. A privacy-glazed door is better for a windowless or internal bathroom that needs borrowed light.
