A rustic oak door keeps the natural character of the wood rather than selecting it out. The knots, the grain movement and the shifts in colour are part of the look, which gives these doors their aged, characterful look. It is the grade to choose when you want a door with some texture and history to it, rather than a clean, uniform face. Every door here is solid oak, built in the traditional plank styles that suit a cottage, a period home or a barn conversion.
How a rustic door is built
These are plank doors, built from solid oak boards rather than an oak veneer over a core. The boards are joined edge to edge with a tongue and groove and held by ledges across the back. Some add a diagonal brace for extra rigidity, and others set the plank field inside a frame for a more finished front. The face of each board can be worked with a bead and butt or a V-groove profile, which are the two traditional board profiles and change the look rather than the construction. Because the oak is a character grade, the knots, the colour and the grain vary from door to door, so no two are quite the same.
Rustic and the other oak characters
Rustic is one of the ways we group our doors by the character of the oak itself, alongside the cleaner grades. Where a rustic door is full of knots and movement, our American white oak doors have a cleaner, more even grain that suits a calmer, more contemporary room. Our light oak doors keep the lightest, palest tones for a brighter space. Our European oak doors carry a warmer, more figured grain, and our Grade A solid oak doors are cut from the top selection grade. If you are not sure which character fits your home, you can compare them all, and the different finishes, on our internal doors by material and finish page.
Finishing your rustic oak doors
Our rustic doors are supplied unfinished, sanded and ready to seal once they are hung, so the final tone is yours to set. You will find the wider unfinished oak doors range alongside them, and if you would rather a door that arrives sealed, our prefinished oak doors cover that instead. On a character grade door, a hardwax oil such as Treatex settles into the grain and brings out the knots and tone, rather than sitting on the surface like a varnish. You will find the oils and waxes for it in our internal door treatments range, and traditional black door hardware suits the rustic look.
Rustic Oak Door FAQs
Rustic grade oak is solid oak that keeps its natural character, including the knots, grain movement and colour variation of the board. It gives a more natural, aged look than the cleaner, more even face of a prime grade door.
Yes. The doors in this range are solid oak throughout, built as traditional plank doors from tongue and groove boards held by ledges. The rustic look comes from the character of the oak, not a different construction.
Both are profiles worked into the plank boards, so they change the look rather than the construction. A bead and butt profile has a rounded bead along the joint, while a V-groove has a chamfered V between the boards.
