Abbey 3 Ledge Rustic Bead and Butt Internal Cottage Door

The Abbey 3 Ledge Rustic Bead and Butt Cottage Door is a solid oak plank door with genuine countryside character, an authentic cottage look that suits period and modern homes alike. It is one of our oak barn doors, built from upright oak boards held by three horizontal ledges, with no diagonal braces, so the boards and the natural grain carry the look.

It is handmade in the UK from specially kiln-dried rustic-grade oak. Rustic grade keeps the knots, shakes and natural colour movement that give the door its character, so it carries small knots and, on some boards, larger rustic knots that can be filled if you prefer a smoother look. Nail holes are visible in the face and can be filled to taste, and because every board is different, no two doors are exactly alike.

The boards are finished with a bead and butt profile, where a rounded bead runs along each joint for a softer, traditional line. It is worked into the same solid oak boards, so it adds character to the face without changing how the door is built. Because the oak is rustic and hand-selected, the number and width of the boards varies a little from door to door.

Being solid oak all the way through, rather than an oak face over a manufactured core, the door can be sanded back and re-treated over its life, and trimmed a little to fit an opening. Oak moves slightly with the seasons, so leave a small gap for expansion when fitting.

A cottage door like this suits traditional T-hinges, the long strap hinge that runs across the ledges and matches the plain board face. You can match the hinges, latches and other fittings on our door hardware pages. It is also available in made-to-measure sizes for a non-standard opening.

The door is supplied pre-sanded and unfinished, or prefinished through our in-house oiling service. Seal every face and edge before use with a suitable hardwax oil such as Treatex or Osmo, treating any cuts. Please note that all rustic doors contain natural-coloured filler in any open knots, which is part of the rustic character rather than a fault.

*We apply a shipping surcharge of £35.00 to certain postcodes for door orders and £25 for timber only orders, which can also add an additional 5 working days to the delivery lead time, see our delivery page for more information.

For Standard deliveries, you will receive contact from the courier prior to delivery. For Express deliveries, you will not receive contact from the courier, with the aim to avoid delays in the Express delivery.

If you have chosen additional options for your items such as prefinishing, please allow up to an additional 10 working days for delivery. This will depend on the number of in-house oiling requests and the chosen finish which will affect the number of coats and required drying time.

Generally delivery is a weekday service. Couriers may however operate on weekends during busy periods. As such, we are unable to offer weekend deliveries, but this may be offered by the courier if they call to arrange your delivery date and time. Please note that your delivery will be made to the kerbside. As such, please ensure you can move your order to a secure location.

All delivery times given are based on orders being placed before 12-midday and the lead times are from once your order has been dispatched, not placed.

As unforeseen circumstances can, on the rare occasion, cause delivery issues, we do not recommend booking any tradesmen until your items have been delivered.

Flooring Delivery

Delivery is typically 7-10 days from order date. Your flooring will normally come on a pallet and be shipped using a kerbside delivery. We will call you before delivery to agree a date that suits as someone will need to be available to help offload. Please remember that our solid oak flooring is particularly thick and therefore very heavy. 65m2 will weigh approximately 1 tonne/1000kg.
