Oak Victorian Doors

A Victorian door is a panelled period door, built to the proportions that were common in Victorian homes. The face is divided into panels set within a frame of stiles and rails, with a moulding worked around each panel to give the door its depth and shadow. Made in oak, it keeps a period home in character and adds age and warmth to a newer one, while the panelled front suits a traditional scheme as readily as a painted one.

Four panel and six panel

The two classic layouts are four panel and six panel. A four panel door carries two long panels above two shorter ones, the most familiar Victorian face. A six panel door adds a further pair, for a more formal, detailed look. Both are framed and moulded in the same way, so the choice is about the proportion you want rather than how the door is built. The panels themselves can be flat or raised, which changes how much shadow the face carries.

Solid or half glazed

Where you want to bring light between rooms, a four panel door is also offered half glazed, with the upper panels replaced by an opening for glass. It is supplied ready for your own glass, so you can choose clear, patterned or obscured to suit the room, and we suggest safety glass for a door. Period door furniture finishes the look, and our door hardware pages carry nickel, brass and pewter to match a traditional scheme.

How Victorian differs from other period styles

Within the period range, the difference is in the panel proportions and the moulding. A 1930s door carries the cleaner, lighter panelling of the inter-war years, a step towards a simpler face. For a plainer look again, our Shaker doors drop the moulding for a flat recessed panel in a square frame. Victorian sits at the more detailed end, with the fuller moulded panels that mark the era.

Solid Oak Victorian Doors

Made in solid oak throughout, the door you hang is the same wood all the way through rather than an oak face over a manufactured core. The frame is joined with mortice and tenon, the strongest traditional joint, so a panelled door stays square and true over its life. Because the material is consistent right through, a solid oak door can be sanded back and re-treated many times, and trimmed to fit an opening. Oak moves a little with the seasons, so leave a small gap for expansion when fitting.

Finishing your doors

Every door is supplied unfinished as standard, ready to seal to suit the room. Oak needs a finish to protect it and to bring out the grain. Use a suitable hardwax oil such as Treatex, which is made for solid oak doors, or let our oiling service do it for you before dispatch. Seal all faces, including the top and bottom edges, which are the ones most often missed. Our maintenance guide covers keeping the finish right over time.

Explore other oak door styles

Victorian is one of several oak door styles in the range. For plank and country designs, see our barn, ledge and brace and framed, ledged and braced doors, whose named form is the Suffolk, along with our cottage doors. Within the period range, see the 1930s and wider period doors.

For cleaner and modern lines our Shaker, Mexicano and contemporary doors keep it simpler, while our traditional doors gather the classic side together. Browse every style from the internal doors by style hub, and finish the job with matching door handles and hardware.
