Choosing Your Oak Floor

Every floor in our range is real oak on the surface, built as either engineered or multi-ply board rather than a solid plank. Both put a genuine oak wear layer over a cross-bonded core, which is what lets an oak floor sit happily over underfloor heating and hold its shape across a large room where a solid board would be more likely to cup or gap. It sands, oils and ages like oak because the surface is oak, not a laminate or an oak-effect print, so the real decision is the range, the board size and the pattern rather than whether the floor is genuinely oak.

The ranges differ in board width, length and finish, so the quickest way to narrow it down is to shop by range, by construction or by pattern using the sections above, then order a sample of any you are weighing up before you commit to a full floor.

Engineered and Multi-Ply Oak Flooring

The two constructions suit slightly different jobs. Our engineered oak flooring runs to the wider, longer planks of the Balmoral and Variante ranges, for a calmer floor with fewer joints across a room. Our multi-ply oak flooring - the Loch, Blenheim, Barn and Balmoral Colours boards - adds extra layers in the core for maximum stability, which makes it a confident choice over underfloor heating and in larger or busier rooms. Widths, board lengths and finishes vary from one range to the next, so it is worth comparing a couple before you decide.

Oak Herringbone Flooring

For a floor with more of a statement, our oak herringbone flooring lays real oak blocks in the classic zig-zag pattern, a timeless parquet-style look that suits both period and contemporary rooms. A herringbone floor takes more planning and more blocks per square metre than a straight-plank floor, so order a sample and work out your coverage before buying.

Flooring Accessories: Underlay, Adhesive and Trims

A floor is only as good as what goes under and around it. Our flooring accessories cover the underlay, damp-proof membranes and adhesives that prepare the subfloor, the matching oak trims - ramps, cover strips, scotia, quadrant and threshold sections - that finish the edges, and the Bona aftercare that keeps the floor looking its best. You can also browse the complete oak flooring range in one place.

Match Your Floor to the Room

Oak flooring works best when it is planned alongside the oak already in the room. Finish the joint where the floor meets the wall with matching oak skirting boards, carry the oak up to the windows with oak window boards, and see the wider range of trim and finishing in our oak skirting, architrave and accessories hub.
