Unit price perStable Doors in Solid Oak
A stable door is split across the middle, so the top half opens on its own while the bottom half stays shut. It is the classic choice for a kitchen, boot room or back entrance, letting in light and fresh air while a dog or a small child stays safely inside. Ours are made in oak, and you can buy a complete door ready to hang or build one from a separate stable top and base.
Internal and external stable doors
The first choice is where the door is going. Our internal stable doors are made for rooms inside the house, in a kitchen, utility or pantry, in plank, V-groove and butt-and-bead profiles. Our external stable doors are built for outdoor use in grade-A solid oak, for a back or garden entrance that has to shut tight against the weather. Both split the same way; the difference is the build and the finish.
A complete door, or a stable top and base
You can buy a complete stable door, or make one up from two halves. Buying the top and base separately lets you pair the top you want with a matching base, which helps when you are working to an existing opening. The solid oak stable base is the bottom half, and it pairs with any of our solid oak stable tops; the tops have the rebate machined in and are reversible, so the finished door can hang to open inwards or outwards.
Light and glass
The top half is where the light comes in, and how much glass you want sets the balance between daylight and privacy. A cottage top has a small feature window, a French top one large glazed panel, and a four panel top spreads the light across four panes. On a solid oak door or top the glazed opening is supplied unglazed and machined ready for the glass your fitter supplies, so you can choose clear or obscured. Engineered oak stable doors arrive pre-glazed, with the sealed unit already fitted.
- A stable door splits across the middle, so the top opens on its own or both halves swing together

- Engineered oak doors for wide or exposed openings, supplied pre-glazed
- Buy a complete door, or a separate stable top and base to build your own
- Solid oak tops are reversible, to hang opening inwards or outwards
Finishing and care
Most oak stable doors are supplied unfinished, so oil every face and edge, including along the split where the two halves meet, before hanging, and re-coat periodically to keep it weather-tight; our external door treatments cover the method, and an external door is happiest under a porch or canopy. A weather bar throws rain clear of the threshold on an exposed opening.
Frames, fitting and hardware
Hang it in a matching external oak door frame with the cill included, and fit the right external door handles and hardware for the split, since the two halves each need their own hinges and a bolt to work as one door.
Frequently asked questions
Two things are worth knowing. If you choose solid oak the glass is not included, so you arrange that yourself, and an unfinished oak door has to be treated before it is hung and re-coated afterwards, so it asks a little more of you than a door that arrives finished. One design in the range arrives prefinished and ready to hang, so check the product pages if you would rather skip that part.
Cutting a standard door in half is not a like-for-like swap. A purpose-built stable door has the rebate machined in where the two halves meet, and ours are made as two pieces from the start, which saves that work.
Usually yes. Measure the height and width of the opening first and check the sizes on the product page; our solid oak stable doors can be made to measure if nothing standard fits.
