Traditional Oak Internal Doors
Traditional oak internal doors bring warmth, solidity and a sense of age to a home, and they suit a period property and a newer build after some character alike. Traditional covers several looks in our range, from the panelled doors of a particular era to the plain planks of a country cottage. What they share is the material and the making: each door is built from oak, either solid oak or an oak veneer over a solid core, with the joinery and detailing of a classic door rather than a flat modern face. This page gathers the classic side of the internal range in one place.
Panelled period doors
For the panelled look of a particular era, our period doors carry the detail of the age they come from. Victorian doors use four and six panel layouts with raised mouldings for a formal, worked face. The lighter 1930s style keeps a cleaner one-over-three panel look from the inter-war years. Each is offered in solid oak and in oak veneer, and many come with glazed or FD30 fire-rated versions, so one style can run through a whole house, including the openings that need to be fire doors.
Solid Oak Traditional Doors
Solid oak gives the most authentic and substantial traditional door, with oak right through and a face that can be sanded back and re-treated over the years. Because the timber is solid, a door in a busy hallway keeps its look for decades, and it can be trimmed at the edges to fit an older, out-of-square opening, within the maker's limits. Oak is a natural material that moves a little with the seasons, so leave a small expansion gap when you hang it. Grade describes the look of the face, the knots and the colour, rather than the strength of the door.
Oak veneer, glazed and fire doors
Where you want the same traditional look in a lighter door, an oak veneer over a solid core keeps the oak face while holding the door flat and stable. It is also where most of the glazed and FD30 fire-rated options sit, so a period-style door can still do the job of a fire door or borrow light into a dark hall. A glazed traditional door sets small panes into the panelled layout. Whichever you choose, the face is oak, with natural grain and tone.
Cottage and plank doors
For a plainer, more rustic look, our cottage and Suffolk doors keep a simple plank face rather than panels. The barn door uses wide boards held by ledges across the back. Add a diagonal brace and it becomes a ledge and brace door, and set those boards inside a frame and it becomes a frame and ledge door. All are solid oak, with bead and butt or V-groove board profiles, and they suit a cottage, a barn conversion or any room after a country feel.
Finishing your traditional oak door
How you finish the door depends on how it arrives. Unfinished doors should be sealed on every face before use, including the top and bottom edges that are easy to miss. Prefinished doors arrive ready to hang, though any edge you trim still needs sealing.
