Internal Doors by Size

Size is about matching a door to the opening you already have, rather than the look or the way it is built. UK internal doors come in a set range of standard widths and two height systems, so most projects come down to finding the width that fits and then choosing the style you want in it. Below are the popular sizes in our range, grouped from the narrowest through to the widest, so you can start from the opening you need to fill and narrow down from there. If you are still deciding between size, style, construction and finish, start with our internal oak doors guide for an overview of the main choices.

Standard and compact widths

Most homes are built around a small number of common widths. 762mm (30 inch) doors are the standard UK internal width and where our range is fullest, the size that fits the majority of bedroom, living room and hallway openings. Where an opening is a little tighter, 686mm (27 inch) doors are an imperial width found most often in older and period homes, letting you replace a 27 inch door without re-lining the frame. Narrower still, 610mm (24 inch) doors are the slimmest standard size, made for cupboards, cloakrooms, en-suites and the tight openings common in cottages and terraces.

Wider and more accessible widths

At the broad end of the range, 813mm (32 inch) doors give a wider, more generous opening for larger rooms, and many are period designs that also come in a taller height to suit older homes. 838mm (33 inch) doors are the widest standard width, chosen for grander openings and for easier access, and our wheelchair accessible doors gather the widths best suited to step-free use. If the opening does not match a standard size, a made-to-measure door can be built to your exact dimensions.

Door heights and thickness

Width is only half of a door size. Imperial doors are 1981mm (78 inch) tall as standard, with a taller 2032mm (80 inch) offered on many period ranges to suit the higher ceilings of Victorian, Edwardian, Georgian and 1930s homes, while modern metric doors run to 2040mm and come in metric widths such as 626mm, 726mm and 826mm, so it is worth knowing which system your opening follows. On thickness, most of our oak internal doors are 35mm, with heavier rustic bead-and-butt and ledged barn styles at 40mm to 44mm, and fire doors at 44mm or more over a fire-resisting core. Sizes and trimming allowances vary between individual doors, so always check the product before ordering.

Measuring, trimming and fire doors

Measure the structural opening rather than the old door, taking the width and height at three points and working to the largest figure, as older properties are rarely perfectly square. Our doors include a trimming allowance so a leaf can be eased down for a clean fit, though the amount varies by product: solid oak allows more than a veneered door, and some fire doors cannot be trimmed at all. Where building regulations call for a fire door, most popular widths are also made as certified oak fire doors, built at 44mm over a fire-resisting core.
