Modern Oak Internal Doors

Modern internal doors keep the lines clean and let the oak do the talking. Instead of the deep panelling and heavy mouldings of a period door, a modern door works from simple shapes: a smooth flush face, a crisp single panel, or a glazed door that carries daylight from room to room. In oak, that pared-back look still brings natural warmth, grain and tone, so the room feels calm rather than cold. These doors suit open-plan layouts, new builds and Scandinavian-inspired schemes, and they sit comfortably against modern fittings, from matt black levers to brushed steel handles.

Styles of modern oak door

The range covers a few clear looks, so you can match the door to the room. A flush door gives an unbroken oak face for the most minimal finish. A simply panelled door adds a little shadow and depth without the busy detail of a period design, and the panel count runs from one to three depending on the look you want. A glazed door borrows daylight into hallways and through internal walls in open-plan homes. The Mexicano is our most contemporary plank design, with clean machined vertical grooves, while the Shaker sets a flat recessed panel in a plain square frame that bridges classic and modern.

Solid Oak Modern Doors

Solid oak gives the most substantial modern door, with a genuine oak face and oak right through. Because the timber is solid, the surface can be sanded back and re-treated over the years, so a door in a busy hallway keeps looking its best. A solid door can also be trimmed at the stiles and rails to fit an opening that is not quite square, within the maker's limits. Oak is a natural material that moves a little with heat and humidity, so leave a small expansion gap when you hang it and follow the fitting guidance. Grade describes the look of the face, the knots and the colour, rather than how strong the door is.

Oak veneer, glazed and fire doors

Many modern doors use an oak veneer over a solid core. This keeps the same clean oak face in a lighter, more dimensionally stable door, and the core holds the door flat, which is why the tall and glazed designs are usually veneered rather than solid. It is also where most of the glazed and FD30 fire-rated options sit. A glazed modern door shares light between rooms, and a fire door holds back fire for up to thirty minutes as part of a complete, fitted fire-door set. Whichever you choose, the face is oak, with natural grain and tone.

Finishing your modern oak door

How you finish the door depends on how it arrives. Unfinished doors should be sealed on every face before use, including the top and bottom edges that are easy to miss. Prefinished doors arrive ready to hang, but any edge you trim to size still needs sealing. Use a suitable hardwax oil to keep the clean modern look and protect the surface, and avoid stains or varnishes, which can affect the warranty. Two thin coats, well worked in, give better protection than one heavy coat. Our door treatments and maintenance guide cover day to day care.

If you would rather a warmer, classic look, see the traditional range or the panelled period doors. The period range covers Victorian four and six panel designs and the cleaner 1930s style. For a plainer country feel, the cottage and Suffolk doors keep a simple plank face. The barn and ledge and brace doors add ledged and braced boarded construction, and the frame and ledge door sets those boards inside a frame. Browse everything by style, and finish with matching door handles and hardware.

Modern Oak Door FAQs

A modern internal door keeps the lines simple: a smooth flush face, a crisp panel, or a glazed door, rather than the panelling and moulding of a period door. In oak, it brings natural warmth and grain to a clean, contemporary scheme.

Both. Solid oak gives the most substantial door, while oak veneer over a solid core keeps the same clean look in a lighter, more dimensionally stable door, and is where most of the glazed and fire-rated options sit. Either way you get an oak face with natural grain.

Yes. Many modern doors are glazed to carry light between rooms, and there are FD30 fire-rated options that hold back fire for up to 30 minutes as part of a complete, fitted fire-door set.
