Oak Doors for Standard 30 Inch Openings

At 762mm, or 30 inches, this is the standard internal door width in most UK homes, and for a great many houses it is simply the size the doorways already are. If you are replacing tired internal doors, this is very often the width you need, which makes it the natural like-for-like choice when you want to keep the existing frames and linings in place. It is the default size across our range of popular door sizes, made in the standard 1981mm (78 inch) height, and because it is the size most homes are built around, it is where our range is at its fullest.

The Size Most UK Homes Already Use

Thirty inches has been the everyday internal width for hallways, bedrooms and living rooms for decades, so in most modern and many post-war homes the openings are already built for it. That makes a 30 inch door the straightforward swap, as the old door comes off and a new 762mm leaf hangs in the same frame without re-lining or re-cutting the opening. It is still worth measuring first, though, as frames settle over time and are rarely perfectly square. A few checks before you order:

  • Measure the structural opening, not the old leaf, at the top, middle and bottom, and work to the largest figure.
  • Check the frame is square and note any twist, which affects how the door sits and closes.
  • Confirm the height, as these doors come in the standard 1981mm (78 inch).
  • Allow a little on each edge for trimming and clearance.

Where the Choice Is Fullest

Because thirty inches is the size the whole market is built around, it carries the fullest choice of any width, as almost every design we make is offered in 30 inch, so you rarely have to compromise on the look you want just to get the size. Whatever the room calls for, a plain contemporary flush door, a four-panel or shaker design, a glazed door to carry light between rooms, a rustic cottage or ledged style, or a period pattern, it is almost certainly made at this width, and a certified FD30 fire door is too where the regulations ask for one. If your openings turn out to be a different size, the range runs either side of the standard, a slimmer 24 inch or imperial 27 inch door, or a wider 32 inch or widest 33 inch door for larger rooms and easier access.

Construction and Finishing

At this width both constructions are worth weighing up, as a solid oak door is oak the whole way through and can be eased and refinished over many years, while an oak veneer door faces an engineered core that holds its shape through the changes in humidity a well-used room sees day to day. Doors come prefinished, ready to hang, or unfinished to seal once fitted; for an unfinished leaf we recommend a hardwax oil such as Treatex, which feeds and protects the oak while leaving the grain visible and is simple to refresh, rather than a stain, varnish or lacquer that skins over and is harder to patch. You will find those oils in our door treatments range and matching handles, hinges and latches in door hardware.

Yes. 762mm is the metric equivalent of a 30 inch door, so the two describe the same leaf width. You will see both used across the range.

For most modern and many older homes, yes. 762mm (30 inches) is the width used for the majority of internal doorways, such as bedrooms, living rooms and hallways, which is why it is usually the first size to consider and the one with the broadest choice of designs. Always measure your own opening to be sure, as older and period homes can vary.

These doors come in the standard 1981mm (78 inch) height, which suits the majority of UK openings. If your home has taller openings, as some older and period properties do, look at the wider ranges where a taller 2032mm (80 inch) height is offered, or consider a made-to-measure door.
