A prefinished door arrives with the oak already sealed at the factory, so it can be hung straight away with no oiling on site. The finish is applied in controlled conditions, which gives an even coat across every door in the set and a look that matches from room to room. It is the choice when you want a tidy, consistent result and a faster fit, with no drying time to plan around. The one thing to keep in mind is that cutting the door changes this. Any recesses you make for hinges or a latch will expose bare oak, and those small areas should be sealed as you fit the door so the whole edge stays protected.
Prefinished or unfinished
Finish is the main choice here, and it is a simple one to make. A prefinished door is ready to use as it comes, sealed and even, so it suits a project where time on site is tight. Our unfinished oak doors are supplied bare instead, which lets you seal and tone them yourself once they are hung. Choose prefinished for speed and a set finish that needs no work, or unfinished for full control over the final colour and sheen. Both start as the same door, so the only real difference is who applies the finish and when.
Solid oak or oak veneer
Prefinished doors come in both of our constructions, so the sealed finish is not tied to one build. A prefinished solid oak door is oak all the way through, sealed and ready, with the grain running right to the edges. A prefinished oak veneer door sets a sealed oak face over an engineered core. That core helps the door stay flat in a room where warmth and damp shift through the day. Both arrive with the same factory finish, so the choice comes down to whether you want oak throughout or a core built for a steady fit. In a busy hallway or a bathroom that sees a lot of steam, that stability can be worth having.
Across the oak characters
Beyond the two constructions, the oak itself comes in different characters, and the finish suits them all. Our rustic grade keeps the knots and the natural movement in the grain, for a warmer, more lived-in look. American white oak reads cleaner, with a more even grain and fewer markings across the face. For the palest tone in the range, see our light oak doors, which keep a soft, bright colour. Our European oak doors carry a warmer, more figured grain, and our Grade A solid oak doors are cut from the top selection grade. You can compare every finish, material and character side by side on our internal doors by material and finish page. Once the door is chosen, matching door hardware sets off the finish and completes the fit.
Prefinished Oak Door FAQs
A prefinished door is supplied with the oak already sealed at the factory, so it is ready to hang without any oiling or finishing on site. It gives a consistent, professional finish and a faster fit.
Yes, in one place. Any cut-outs you make for hinges and a latch expose bare oak, so those edges should be sealed as you fit the door. The faces and main edges arrive finished.
Both. Prefinished doors come as solid oak, oak throughout, and as an oak veneer over an engineered core. The finish is the same; the choice is the construction.
