Oak Veneer Internal Doors

An oak veneer door sets a layer of natural oak over an engineered core, so you get an oak face on a door built to stay flat and stable. The core resists the warping, twisting and cupping that a centrally heated home can cause, which makes oak veneer doors a steady choice for a modern interior. An oak veneer door usually costs less than the same door in solid oak, and it is a little lighter to hang, while still showing a natural oak grain. This page brings our oak veneer internal doors together, across panel, shaker, glazed and flush styles, so you can compare them in one place.

Oak veneer or solid oak

The main choice is between an oak veneer door and a solid one, and it comes down to how the door is built. An oak veneer door has an oak face over an engineered core, which stays flatter in a room where heat and moisture change through the day. A solid oak door is oak all the way through, with the grain carried to the edges, and it can be sanded back and refinished again and again. Veneer suits a busy or humid spot and a tighter budget, while solid oak gives the full depth of the wood. Both show a natural oak face, so the difference is the core behind it.

Prefinished or unfinished

Oak veneer doors come either prefinished or unfinished, which sets how much work there is on site. Our prefinished veneer doors arrive with the oak already sealed and ready to hang, so there is no oiling before they go up. Our unfinished veneer doors are supplied bare, so you set the colour and sheen yourself once they are hung. Choose prefinished for speed and a factory finish, or unfinished for control over the final look. Either way, seal any edge you trim or cut-out you make as you fit the door.

The oak face and its characters

The oak face on a veneer door comes in more than one character, so you can set the look as well as the build. Our American white oak doors have a straighter, more even grain for a clean, modern face, and our light oak doors keep the palest tone, both carried on a veneer. If you want the knots and movement of a character grade instead, our rustic range covers that in solid oak plank doors. If you would rather have solid oak throughout, our European oak doors carry a warmer, more figured grain and our Grade A solid oak doors are cut from the top selection grade, both in solid oak rather than a veneer. You can compare every material, finish and character side by side on our internal doors by material and finish page. That makes it easy to settle on the internal oak veneer doors that fit your home.

Finishing and caring for oak veneer doors

On an unfinished veneer door, finish it with a clear hardwax oil such as Treatex, which soaks in and brings out the oak grain. Treatex also make coloured oils if you want to tone the wood. Give the face a light sand only, as the oak veneer is thinner than solid oak and is not made to be sanded back hard or repeatedly. Avoid Danish oil, varnish and lacquer, as these do not protect the oak in the same way and can void the guarantee. A prefinished veneer door is already sealed, so it just needs dusting and the odd wipe with a damp cloth. You can find the oils we recommend on our finishing products page, and finish the look with matching door hardware.

Oak Veneer Door FAQs

An oak veneer door has a thin layer of natural oak bonded over an engineered core. You get a genuine oak face and grain, while the core keeps the door flat and stable. It is real oak on the surface, not a printed or imitation finish.

They are built for different things. A veneer door stays flatter in a warm or humid room and usually costs less, while a solid oak door is oak throughout and can be sanded back and refinished many times. Both show a real oak face, so it comes down to where the door has to work and your budget.

An engineered core is designed to resist the warping, twisting and cupping that changes in heat and moisture can cause, so a veneer door tends to stay flatter than solid wood in a centrally heated home. Hanging it correctly and sealing any cut edges helps keep it stable.
