The Bespoke Ordering Process

Made to your measurements

A bespoke door from us is not a stock door cut down to fit. It is built from the ground up to the exact width, height and specification of your opening, in oak selected and worked for that one door. That is what lets us hang a door where a standard size never could, whether your opening is taller, wider or narrower than anything a warehouse holds. Because each door is made to order rather than pulled off a shelf, the process rewards a little care at the outset, and the steps below are how we make sure the door that arrives is exactly the one you had in mind, with nothing left to chance and no surprises along the way.

How it works

From your first enquiry to delivery, here is exactly what happens and what we will need from you at each stage.

1. Choose your design and send your measurements

Start by choosing a design from our range of bespoke oak doors, then send us your sizes and options using the bespoke request form on that door's product page. If you would rather talk it through, call the team on 01455 565 565 and we will take the details with you. There is no commitment at this stage and nothing is charged: you are telling us what you need so we can price it and check it can be made exactly as you want. If you are not sure how to measure, or which design best suits your opening, this is the moment to ask, and we would always rather answer a question now than after a door is on the bench.

2. We quote your door and confirm the detail

We come back to you with a price and a document that sets out precisely what will be made, down to the size, style, finish and any glazing. Depending on how your door is built this is either our own written specification or a drawing from the maker, and we confirm your lead time at the same time so you know exactly where you stand before you commit to anything. Nothing on it is boilerplate: every figure is specific to your door, and if a single detail looks wrong, we put it right before it goes any further.

3. You check it, approve it and send it back

The confirmation comes to you to read through properly. Take your time over every detail, because this is the point where anything can still be changed, and once you are happy you sign and return it. Nothing is ordered or cut until your signed approval is back with us, which is your assurance that the door going into production is the door you actually approved. The sooner it comes back, the sooner your door can begin.

4. Your door is made

With your approval in hand, your door goes into production and your lead time starts from that day. The solid oak doors we make ourselves are built by hand in our own workshop, and the rest are made to order by the makers we have worked with for years, so whichever route your door takes it is made properly rather than quickly. How long it takes depends on how the door is built, which is set out in the table below.

5. We deliver it to you

When your door is ready we arrange delivery and keep you posted as the day approaches, so it does not simply turn up unannounced. Everything is checked before it leaves us, and you can see exactly how delivery works on our delivery information page.

Lead times by door type

Door type What you approve Typical lead time
Solid oak, made in our own workshop (American white oak) Our own written specification, confirming your door 16 to 20 weeks from approval
Solid oak, made to order (European oak designs) Our own written specification, confirming your door 2 to 12 weeks, depending on the design
Veneered oak, made to order A maker's drawing (allow up to around 2 weeks), which we send you to approve 16 to 18 weeks from approval

Lead times begin from the day we receive your signed approval, not the day you enquire.

Good to know

Measurements are yours to provide. We build to the sizes you approve, so please measure carefully, or ask us for guidance before you order.

Made to order means non-cancellable. Once your approval is returned and your door is in production, it cannot be changed, cancelled or returned. See our pre-contract information.

Finishing. Doors are supplied unfinished and pre-sanded, ready to oil once hung, or with a hardwax oil finish already applied if you choose that option. Either way, seal all faces and edges to protect the door.

External doors and some specials carry an additional disclaimer, which we confirm at the time of order. See the external door product disclaimer.
