Treating an External Oak Door
1. Ensure your working area is well ventilated before and after treatment.
2. Mask off any glazing or door furniture with masking tape.
3. Buff over any uneven areas with 240 grit sandpaper, especially after cutting for hinges and handles.
4. Wipe away dust with a micro fiber cloth, then use a damp lint-free cloth for remaining sawdust.
5. Ensure the wood is clean, dry, and free from moisture.
6. Use a UV Protection Oil, applying 3-4 coats for maximum protection.
7. Stir the oil well and apply the base layer evenly, following the wood grain.
8. Sand raised grain areas with 320 grit paper, then apply end grain sealer to exposed end grain.
9. Apply the first coat of colour-protecting coating.
10. Allow 8-12 hours drying time under normal weather conditions.
11. Seal inside lock and letterbox cutouts, behind hinges, top and bottom edges, and sides.
12. Treat both sides of the door simultaneously to maintain consistent moisture content.
13. Lightly sand uneven areas with 320 grit once the first coat is dry.
14. Apply V Joint sealer over the first coat in joint areas.
15. Apply final coats more generously.

What Oil Should I Use to Treat My External Oak Door?

- Impranol colour protecting coating: Apply 3-4 coats. Quick-drying, typically dry to touch within 8 hours. Wait at least 12 hours before adding a second coat.
